I was interested in finding out how high you guys push the resolution of your SPH sims(not hybrido). I know it varies scene to scene based on its scale, but ...

How packed to you like to make your particles ...

when is enough ... enough .. hahaha. This is the type of question that runs through your head while you are waiting on a big sim. lol.

... I wish there was a 'your sim does not require near this resolution' flashing warning .. haha.

There's no set rule or forumla. If it looks like it needs more then it needs more. If the simulation is taking too long it needs fewer. Finding the right balance will take some fiddling and with experience it will become easier and more intuitive.

I have noticed in the past that increasing the resolution can cause the simulation to look larger giving you lots more detail, which in real life you hardly get so much detail at small scales for example. You can balance this out with surface tensions somewhat, so as always its a balancing game.

So many factors will come into play when deciding on resolution such as:

Are you meshing or rendering particles
Scene scale
Type of fluid
How fast is your machine vs deadline!

As with most things, with time you will be able to preempt your requirements.
