Water Mental Ray Renders

Post by Vitor Teixeira » Sat Mar 13, 2010 1:04 am

Hello everyone, I've started to render some of my water shapes and I'm having some problems.
I'm using a dielectric material with IBL (HDRI image).
The settings in MR are for production set but I still get this noise patterns as you can see. I've changed the multi pixel for Gauss but I don't like the effect.
What should I do?

Looks like the pixel sample is too small, try something like 8x8 instead of the default 3x3 (if I remember correctly). Its been a while since I've rendered in Maya, can't remember if they call it pixel sample or something else.

I already did that but it stills the same.
I lose a lot of detail when doing that.
I put the reflections on 1 and the refractions on 5. It's better but still I don't like it very much. What do you think:

When you say refractions you mean the index of refraction? For water it would be approximately 1.333. Higher values will cause greater distortion of refractions within the fluid. Not sure if that's what you mean or not, wish I had Maya in front of me to fiddle.

setting for production means only the antialiasing, the probleme you have is the setting in final gather, number ofRays and Radius, here is the trick:,mesur the scene with mesure node, the put the number you get in the rays and 1/10 for the radius, and go from there

I know that but I was talking of the raytracing settings. The index of refraction on my dielectric material is already with that value.

Bubs I'm not using FG not even GI do you think I should?

hey, rendering with IBL needs FG ,and to enhance the look, try to put some white card,to reflect on the other side,or use the same hdri maps in the reflection, also, blur the image a bit in the image menu within render attribute.

good luck

use the same hdri maps in the reflection
How do I do this?
I think it's better to do all the motion blur in post.
This image took me 30 minutes to render because of the Motion Blur.
I'm using Mitchell in the render settings.
