I just cannot get channels or moving grid fluids to work

Postby Truls » Mon Apr 15, 2013 10:57 am

First I tried reuse the moving fluid technique shown in this video: https://vimeo.com/61719929
This was my result: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOuRTfFxzb8
Then, when nextlimit told me to "animate the domain" I did that, but it did not work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAa5U34PZNo For obvious reasons.
Finally I tried to copy this video - the "channel" technique: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWyyN3clH4E
But my channel gets a very uneven water level - big wave in the front and water running downhill towards the rear: http://youtu.be/SCgMXq_zIYA

Is anyone able to help me out here? I have got the edu version of RF 2012 so you probably can't read my project files. But they are all very simple, so I can give a quick run through of the settings if you need.

Hi,

animating the domain as you did won't work, as you've seen. What you might do instead is animating the domain in a different manner. Just put one smaller domain after another, deleting the domain before from the scene so it doesn't need to calculate, anymore. Think of it like tiling a big domain.

However, this process is a bit complex.

The channel setup is easier, Your problem is there is more fluid streaming out of the domain than you are pumping back in. And that's probably why it is not working as expected.

Hi fxfx,

Thank you very much for replying:) And sorry for being a bit late myself, work got between me and Real Flow. I chose to dig more into the channel technique. From what I saw, the problem wasn't really that more water was escaping than I was adding, but that the wave action meant pressure was too low at the back of the container. So I tried lowering the speed of the water. Here is a perspective of my result: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXEBQ_az5HQ and here is a side view: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lX8ctIkrZE4. The vital details are in the video descriptions.

As you can see, the wave action subsides towards the end. Now I have made the end be the initial state, and I am simming more frames to see how it will look. If that works, I hope it can work for higher speeds given more time:) I only need about 9 knots for the max speed of this boat anyway.

My hope is that if I can reduce the wave action down to very little, this can be the basis of a good compositable ship wake sim.
