Convert realwave to editably poly or mesh?

Hi all,

I need to edit a real-wave surface in 3dsmax as an editable poly, just a single frame of the sequence.
I managed to get the mesh into 3dsmax using the Bin Mesh Loader and it all looks good, but I really need to be able to edit the polys/vertices etc.
Obviously I tried converting it to editably poly/mesh etc but it just seems to disappear.
Does anyone know how this can be done? I tried using displacement maps and a plane as a workaround but the result is way too smooth so I've abandoned that idea.
I don't mind importing/exporting through other software's if that will work but I just need to be able to work on the hexamesh surface as if it was an ordinary editable poly.

If you hit F12 and go to the Export menu in Real Flow, you may be able export a single frame as an OBJ or something that you can edit in your modeling program.
