breaking an object

Postby Tok Tok » Wed Sep 20, 2006 1:29 pm

hi,

I'm new here and i have a question about realflow.
I've searched the internet for an awnser but i really cant find one so hopefully
one of you guys can help me.

is it possible to break an solid object into smaller pieces in realflow???

I have seen a video on the internet were a ball went throug a window.
the pieces of that were quite small, it didnt look like it had been premoddeled.

Before the ball hit the window there weren't any fissures in the glass.

I've been working with realflow a while now so i'm no noob

(sorry for the bad english)

Hi TokTok

as far as I know, breaking objects within RF works only for elastics, where you can set a break limit.
Have a look at the animations with breaking jelly:
http://www.realflowforum.com/view_topic.php?id=24

Other animations where rigid bodies seem to break are made by pre-cutting objects in other programs (for example with the shatter effect in Maya or boolean operations) and simulating the behavior of the pieces in RF.

The animation showing the ball going through glass was maybe done using "blastcode" for Maya ? http://www.blastcode.com/
RF10 standard + RFC4D

that's to bad! i was hoping that is was possible, you can get really great effects
IF it was possible.
I knew what the elastics could do but it was not what i ment.

That's by the way the video i was talking about! :D

Nice isn't it.

It can be achieved in RF if you create the fractures in your 3d app first. Then each individual piece needs to be set up as a Rigid Body. The effect can be achieved in RF with alot of work.

BUT, it sounds like you want RF to determine how an object will break apart. If that is the case then I think the answer is that it can't.

your right, it cant be done.

is searched the internet and everyone, including on this forum, says its imposible in realflow.

making the pieces in 3ds max is almost imposible to do, if want it to be realistic, you would have to study the way glass breaks.

The answer is still Yes and No.

Yes. It can if the pieces are pre defined.

No. It can not if you want RF to generate the breaking pieces.

Can RF break up an object without the help of a 3D app? No.
