rendering a real wave mesh in maya question

Postby royter » Tue Aug 02, 2011 11:26 am

i have a real wave surface with a classical statistical spectrum deformer but the surface is never smooth even if i lower the poly length on the surface node, there is always an ugly tesselation pattern, and this shows alot in the maya render, so is there a way to get rid of these patterns or at least have a mesh with quads only?

Hi... i don't think its possible to get the quad mesh from RF......but u can get the smooth mesh by increasing the resolution of ur realwave.....u can improve a bit by shading...

rendering a real wave mesh in maya question

do u mean i should lower my poly size? because if thats what u mean by the realwave resolution, then even with this low poly size value, the weird stripes/lines are even more noticeable.
i am shading it with a water shader in maya so the slightest imperfection shows.
i really dont understand why lowering the poly size didnt solve the problem. any ideas?

Could you please post a sample image illustrating the problem?

Unfortunately this is a bug, and always has been.

There are 3 ways I can think of getting around this... (I am a max user so you will need to translate to maya)

1 - Take the sd and apply a smoothrelax modifier (Average in maya i think?)

2 - Take the sd and create a depth map from it using shaders or zdepth and then use that map to displace high res geo.

3 - Take the sd and use that to deform a high res piece of geo

Each way has its pros and cons

anaxarchos here is the scene file and an illustration of the problem:

bit seq thanks fore the info.

1 smoothes the surface that looses the sharp details

2 cant i generate a displacement directly for the real wave out of real flow?

3 this will generate the exact same mesh as the real wave,no?
