In export central there is a field to change the global prefix for data caches, so you can do versions that way.

Personally I just duplicate the project directory.

I found out that amd chipsets will not allow rf to sim on the gpu says the help file.

Yes I would recommend using the realwave to generate a flat surface with ripples on, realwave can even create reflected waves from boundaries or objects.

Absolutely realflow is perfect for this job, you could just rent a license if budget is an issue.

The best way to do this would be to simulate your scene at the normal speed and then once the simulation is run through us the Retimer tool in RF to retime and slow down the simulation where needed, it will generate a new particle cache and also new sd animation files based on your settings, you can...

Do you have claculate texture turned on on the realwave? This is for wetmap generation and should be turned off if you don't need it as it is very slow to calculate.
